What is the PowerDish?
The PowerDish is an innovative solar energy generating product that converts concentrated solar energy into electricity. The PowerDish couples Infinia’s patented, low-cost and maintenance-free Stirling generator with a dish-style solar concentrator to generate clean, electric power without the use of water. The PowerDish is integrated into an Infinia PowerBlock, a 224 kW(ac) output solar system at rated conditions of 850 W/m2, 20 C, and <1 m/s wind. Smaller and larger PowerBlock sizes will be available in the future.
How does the PowerDish work?
The PowerDish uses a concentrator dish to reflect and focus the sun’s energy onto the hot end of a free-piston Stirling generator. This concentrated solar energy creates a temperature differential across the generator: hot from concentrated sunlight at one end and the ambient air temperature at the other end. This temperature differential causes the helium inside the engine to expand and contract that in turn makes a piston move back and forth inside. The back and forth motion of the piston causes a linear alternator inside the Stirling generator to generate AC electrical current.
Do you have any PowerDish installations?
Yes, we currently have units installed in the US and India.
Can I get one for my home?
Today we utilize a number of PowerDish units integrated into a 224 kW(ac) solar system, the Infinia PowerBlock. In the future, a smaller size for residential applications will likely be made available.
How efficient is the PowerDish?
The PowerDish has demonstrated peak conversion efficiency above 20% making it one of the most efficient sun-to-grid electricity of any commercial solar system available.
When will you start shipping PowerDish on a commercial basis?
Today we have units operating at 7 different sites around the world including an installation at a commercial dairy in Yuma, Arizona and at a corn chip manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. With orders that we are fulfilling in 2012 and early 2013, the Infinia PowerBlock can be purchased for delivery in early 2Q 2013.
Where is Infinia planning to deploy its product?
Infinia’s initial target markets are in Mediterranean countries India, Middle East, South Africa, and in the southwestern United States. China and Australia are also key markets for the PowerDish and the Infinia PowerBlock.
Where will most of the manufacturing take place?
Our PowerDish design enables various levels of components to be sourced in “local” markets based on market size and industrial capabilities.
How many kWh does the PowerDish produce?
The output of a PowerDish and the integrated Infinia PowerBlock is dependant mostly on the direct normal solar irradiance (DNI) which varies significantly at specific sites around the world. At higher DNI locations, the Infinia PowerBlock will produce much more than any other solar technology at that location. A single Infinia PowerBlock in a higher DNI location could produce 550,000 kWh or more per year (2,455 kWh/kW or more installed).
How much room do you need for a MW size project?
It depends on the specific site and project. The PowerDish units in Infinia PowerBlock installations can usually be put on 6 – 8 acres per MW (ac) rating.
Who is Infinia?
Infinia is a collection of talent, customers, suppliers and investors that are out to change the world. We are privately held, with headquarters in Ogden, Utah and have a presence in Madrid, Tokyo, New Delhi, Los Angeles, and Kennewick, WA. Our business is built around the belief that we can use our proprietary free piston Stirling engine in products that really make a difference. Today we are focused on revolutionizing the solar market. Tomorrow…we aim to change the world with biogas power and solar biogas hybrid providing 24 hr / day renewable energy.
How many PowerDish units in a MW?
The PowerDish units are integrated into an Infinia PowerBlock that is rated at 224 kW(ac) at 850 W/m2, 20C, and <1 m/s wind. So 5 Infinia PowerBlock systems or 320 PowerDish units will produce nominally 1.12 MW.
What is the PowerDish’s lifespan?
The PowerDish has a service life that exceeds 25 years. Once the engine is sealed – it will literally run for 25 years without any maintenance.
Why would a customer buy your product instead of a PV system?
A customer buys our PowerDish system mainly because they like the lower cost of electricity it provides. Some buy because they like the way the product looks and operates. Some buy because we are Made in the USA. Some buy because they make more money buying PowerDish than buying PV panels. Overall, our system can provide many benefits that other systems simply don’t. Bottom line – in high DNI locations around the world, the PowerDish produces more energy, at a lower cost than competing technologies.
